Philadelphia Historical Events

1829: The Athenaeum of Philadelphia is founded.

In 1829, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia was already a well-established institution, having been founded in 1814 as a member-supported library. The Athenaeum's purpose, according to its organizational principles, was to collect materials related to architecture, interior design, and landscape design, making it a national center for architectural history. The Athenaeum was founded as a literary and cultural society on the model of similarly named New England organizations, and it quickly grew in prestige, membership, and the variety of books and periodicals available to its stockholders. The building itself, designed in 1845 by architect John Notman in the Italianate style, is a National Historic Landmark and boasts one of Philadelphia’s finest 19th-century interiors.

The Athenaeum of Philadelphia's founders were leading citizens of what was then the largest city in the United States, and the institution became the official repository of the records of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute. For nearly three decades, the Athenaeum occupied the first floor of Philosophical Hall, next to Independence Hall, across Fifth Street from The Library Company of Philadelphia. This period saw the Athenaeum's rapid growth in importance and influence, as it continued to serve as a hub for intellectual and cultural exchange in the city.

The Athenaeum of Philadelphia played a crucial role in promoting reading and higher learning in Philadelphia, and its establishment reflected the city's commitment to intellectual and cultural development. Today, the Athenaeum remains a vital institution, preserving and promoting the architectural history of Philadelphia and serving as a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and enthusiasts of design and architecture.
